Q: Can Japanese Domestic Models (JDM's) be imported into North America?

A: JDM's aren't built to automatically conform to Federal or Canadian standards.  As a USA  individual, you must  engage the assistance of a  CCI, Certified Commercial Importer, who will perform the necessary conversions and certifications with EPA, NHTSA, etc. for you to be able to license a non-complying imported vehicle.  Appreciate that this will take time, and cost money. Lots of paperwork must be lodged and approvals granted with Govt. agencies before you can import a non-complying vehicle.

A Bond equivalent to 150% of the vehicles value must be lodged with the Customs (Commerce) Dept. You must apply for, and receive, an EPA waiver prior to importation.

Canada doesn't seem to have any such process, but vehicles complied into the USA appear to be  subsequently accepted by  Canada  for registration.

The NHTSA have a list of CCI's, Registered Importers, in your area, and an informative site which gives a rundown of  procedures, and a list of  import vehicles that have already been complied to US Federal standards.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import and http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/standards

NOTE: We do NOT supply any JDM model that automatically complies with Federal regulations!  We do NOT supply any Left Hand Drive JDM's, or LHD conversion kits for any make or Model!  We do NOT modify  any  JDM vehicles  to conform with  Federal  or  Canadian Design standards!   We do NOT approach North American Govt. Depts. on your behalf!

Q: Is there any other way to import a  JDM  into the USA or Canada?

A: USA has a "Display" provision where you can  import a  non-complying vehicle  ,with a minimum of conversion, but there  is a restriction on the mileage  you can drive in a Year.  Both in Canada and the USA there appears to be provisions to import non-complying vehicles  for   OffRoad performance events (Read: Racing).  In either respect, you must obtain all necessary permissions BEFORE you import, and  these permissions come from Govt. Depts. your side, not from  Graham Motors!!

SO: Study the above NHTSA site. Contact your local Customs Department and Dept. responsible for Registration of Motor Vehicles and get the full story before you Import!  Talk to a Registered Importer (CCI) in your Area.

BOTTOM LINE: Our Business doesn't revolve around educating North Americans into  the finer points of  importing Japanese Domestic Model vehicles (with over 1000 enquiries last year alone, we'd go broke!).  Enquiries along these lines to ourselves will direct you to the above  NHTSA link.

GUYS;THERE IS A PROCESS!  (1) ASK QUESTIONS YOUR  SIDE. (2) MAKE SOME  PHONE CALLS TO  GOVT. DEPARTMENTS. (3)MEET AND TALK TO  A REGISTERED IMPORTER IN YOUR AREA.

You are now ready to :(a) order your JDM car! (b) give up and buy an Oldsmobile while you can still get one.........(just kidding folks!!)

Oh; for Nissan Skyline importation into the USA FOLLOW THIS LINK

Conversions for SVA:
Vehicles more than 3 Years old require speedometer conversion to MPH and a Fuel restrictor neck fitted, then an MOT. Vehicles less than 3 Years old at the time of importation, and New vehicles, require an  SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) test prior to registration. Contact Protech UK for speedo conversion, SVA preparation, and all other Grey market import needs: http//www.protech-uk.co.uk  Tell them we sent you!

Port of Entry for England: Southampton by RO/RO service has turnaround of 30/32 days. For Ireland; Dublin by RO/RO service.

For EUROPE; Japanese Domestic Models (JDM's) are Right Hand Drive. This may mean you will have to arrange  LHD conversion your side after importation. Any vehicle that's registered in the UK can be transferred into any other  EU country.  EU regulations are now allowing the transfer of Right Hand drive models into EU countries.

We have sold vehicles into Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany using Port of Entry Amsterdam or Rotterdam Holland. Sales also to Cyprus, Greece, and Malta of JDM's shipped direct.

We welcome feedback from anyone that does Customs clearances, SVA conversions, Left Hand Drive conversions, or can provide links to this page from Govt. Depts. outlining procedure and regulations.  These will be added and link to this page.

ASIA: INDIA/SINGAPORE/MALAYSIA/INDONESIA/HONG KONG

Q: Can Japanese Domestic Vehicles  (JDM's) be imported into Asia?

A: JDM's are Right Hand Drive which can be a restriction for some countries, eg. Vietnam or China

For INDIA:  New vehicles may be parallel imported by Dealers or Individuals provided these are supplied with "Euro1" exhaust emissions Certification, which we can arrange.  The importation of Used vehicles is currently prohibited, but  the World Trade Organization has requested that India drop this tariff barrier from March 2001.  We have received a lot of conflicting information as to whether or not this will actually occur.  Current state of opinion is that importation of Used vehicles will be allowed, but with considerable restrictions and high tariffs. All tariff and Customs information for India are at: http://www.ieport.com
Typical Ports of Entry:  Nhava  Shiva,  Bombay,Calcutta

For SINGAPORE:  Individuals may import their own Vehicles, or use an Import Agent or Dealer Singapore side.  The LTA  (Land Transport Authority),  have an excellent and informative  website:  http://www.onemotoring.com.sg  We will also have an  Agent  in Singapore that can arrange all importation requirements and also finance for New vehicles we sell. You may still order directly from us!  http://www.ez-import.com  All  Mitsubishi and Isuzu models are supplied with CIC's;  all other Units with Reg./Dereg. Certification as the LTA requires.  Yes, all vehicles can be  supplied with "Euro-2" Certification!  We are aware of  all  procedure and documentation requirements into Singapore, and can provide everything you need for a  smooth  clearance and registration process. NO problem with documentation, Euro-2 Testing or the 90-Day import requirement of LTA.

For MALAYSIA/INDONESIA:  Appears to have similar procedures to Singapore.  Possibility our Singapore Agent will cover your area for import assistance and finance.  Enquire!
Typical Port Of Entry:  Kelang, Jakarta
Check out the site: http://www.zerotohundred.com

For HONG KONG:  Appears to be no restriction to importation of New or Used JDM's.
Typical Port Of Entry:  Kowloon

Feedback is welcome from anyone that does Customs Clearances into Asian countries, has updated information on regulations, tariffs, procedures or links to Govt. Dept. websites.  These will be added to this page.
